How to do chemical peels at home

Chemical Peels at Home (DIY)

Chemical peel is an effective way to treat sun damage, marks left behind from acne, and dull skin. They can be quite expensive to get done at a spa or doctor's office, so more and more people are turning to at-home chemical peel kits.  At-home chemical peels are not that different from professional chemical peels, but they do have their risks. After all, there is no one watching over your skin during the peel to monitor its progress. However, learning how to properly use the peels, using quality peels from reputable sources, understanding what to expect, and being aware of potential side effects will increase your chances of getting good at-home peel results for less than half the price of a professional one. Keep reading to learn how to safely give yourself a chemical peel in the comforts of your own home!

Where to buy chemical peels

Before you can give yourself a chemical peel, you first have to get your hands on one. Many online retailers sell chemical peel solutions, either alone or as a kit, in a variety of strengths and percentages. You may be able to purchase take-home kits from spas or dermatologist offices, but they will usually recommend getting the peel done there instead of doing it yourself. There are also many different types of chemical peels and the one you use will depend on what kind of results you want and what you are willing to go through in terms of pain and downtime.

Most places also sell a trial size peel. I recommend purchasing a sample to test on your skin before buying the full size product. You never know if your skin will hate a certain acid or if a peel will be too weak for your skin, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

At any rate, make sure you purchase your peel from a reputable company with good product reviews. The company you purchase your peel from should also provide you with detailed instructions on how to use the peel. Aside from the quality of the chemical peel, customer service is another important deciding factor. You want to make sure the company will be there to help answer any questions you have about their peel and not flake on you when you need them most.

glycolic acid peel in British Dermatology ( UK )

A Glycolic Peel is also known as an alpha hydroxy acid peel.
Glycolic acid is a natural acid derived from fruit acid found in sugar cane and citrus fruits. It can, however, also be man-made.
Glycolic peels are chemical peels that are used in cosmetic procedures. This peel not only works on the outermost skin level, it also penetrates to the deeper skin layers.
The peel removes the top layer of skin, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. It is a rapid exfoliant that will slough away dead, dry skin cells resulting in an even-toned, radiant and glowing appearance. Your newly exfoliated skin will feel soft and smooth, turning your problem skin into flawless skin.

Who is a candidate for a Glycolic Peel?

Many types of people will benefit from a Glycolic Peel. If you have fine lines and wrinkles, the glycolic acid minimizes their appearance. This is also an excellent choice for application to blemishes and freckles.
Melanin, located primarily in the outer layers of the skin, provides skin color. When the peel is applied to the skin, it breaks up the excess melanin, giving you a more natural looking skin tone.
A Glycolic Peel can also be used in the prevention and treatment of acne and on areas of sun-damaged skin that can potentially contain pre-cancerous cells.

Results

Typically you will see results after just one peel. Following multiple procedures, there will be improved skin texture and a rejuvenated appearance to your skin.
The Glycolic Peel is versatile as well as safe for all skin tones and skin types. It can be used on light to dark skin tones and acne-prone skin as well as on oily, normal, dry or combination skin types.
Dr. Jessica Krant is an excellent choice for those individuals considering Glycolic Peels. Dr. Krant, a dermatologist that is board certified, offers numerous technologically advanced methods including Vivite® 70 percent Glycolic peels with the ability to penetrate multiple skin layers and provide maximum benefits. Glycolic Peels are one of the fastest treatments available today.

Procedure

Initially, your face will be thoroughly cleansed. The Glycolic Peel will then be applied and allowed to penetrate for several minutes prior to being neutralized and removed with an alkaline solution or water. When your treatment is complete, the skin will have a pinkish tint, with a cream being applied immediately following after the treatment. You may feel a tingly sensation during treatment, which is normal, and it is recommended pain medication be taken prior to the peel.
Once the Glycolic Peel is completed, it is recommended you use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 that is applied several times throughout each day. Application of a cream recommended by Dr. Krant should be applied nightly and is an important part of your typically short recovery process.

glycolic peel vs dermabrasion

If you’ve been considering glycolic acid chemical peels or microdermabrasion treatments, there are several things you should consider before doing either. These treatments are designed to improve mild skin damage, fine lines, tiny wrinkles and other mild complexion problems and both of these treatments can be done in the comfort of your own home.
First, let’s discuss what each procedure consists of and how they work.

What’s Involved

A glycolic acid peel is just what it says. It’s a chemical face peel that uses glycolic acid to remove the surface layer of the skin. It is derived from sugar cane and breaks down the outer skin layer so it peels off to leave new, fresher skin showing. The whole process will take a few days to a week to complete and may require you staying indoors while your skin is peeling off.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that uses tiny crystal like particles to gently remove the surface layer of the skin. There is no peeling with this type of treatment and the only real side effect is slightly pink skin. It can be used a few hours prior to a special engagement whereas a chemical peel needs to be done at least one week prior to a special occasion.

Uses and Benefits

Both glycolic acid skin peels and microdermabrasion are exfoliating treatments. A glycolic peel not only exfoliates but infiltrates the pores which can allow your moisturizer to sink in easier. However, microdermabrasion will stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in your skin making it look more vibrant and alive after treatment. It will take a few weeks for the skin to produce the collagen and elastin so the effects may not be overly noticeable after the first treatment or two.
Microdermabrasion is often gentle enough that it can be used every week or two. Most chemical peels can only be done once a month. You can use both treatments for maximum results. Use a chemical peel one week and then weekly microdermabrasion treatments for a week or two following the glycolic acid peel.

TIP! Glycolic acid peels and microdermabrasion both address common skin problems like fine lines, rough texture and even hyperpigmentation. It’s up to you to decide which is the best treatment for you or if you want to rotate between each treatment and use them both.

Recovery Time

Microdermabrasion is often done before a facial. It helps to remove dead skin while boosting the effects of the facial product’s ability to penetrate the skin. Since there is no down time when getting this type of treatment, you can go about your normal daily routine or even go to a party later that night.
A glycolic acid peel will require some down time. It can take up to a week before the whole process is complete. However, it does offer more noticeable results in the end. If you have the convenience of time on your hands and can spare a few days from work or other activities, it is well worth having this procedure done.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur with the use of glycolic acid especially when used in higher concentrations. The most commonly experienced side effects include scabbing and leaving traces of dark and brown spots. Redness, skin inflammation and itchiness or irritation may also occur. Also, the skin can become more prone to damage from the sun. But this can be avoided by using an excellent quality moisturizer with adequate sunscreen.
Microdermabrasion is a safe procedure since it only affects the outermost layer of the skin, therefore side effects resulting from treatment are usually mild. Some of the more common reactions include redness, skin irritation and skin tightness. Most of these side effects are temporary and should disappear after a few days.

Cost

Glycolic acid peels for at home use can cost upwards of $20 per peel (in United Kingdom it can be even more expensive) and you’ll need to repeat the treatment every six weeks or so for best results.
The cost of at home microdermabrasion products varies widely and that’s because you can choose between a cream-based treatment or a machine. An at-home kit like the ZenMed Skin Eraser Kit costs around $60, with some brands costing over $100. On the other hand, a machine like the Timepeel Natural Diamond Home Microdermabrasion System costs around $200 (at the time of this writing).
Many people do combine using a glycolic acid peel along with microdermabrasion treatments, but you do want to space these out and not use them the same week. It’s best to space them at least two weeks apart. Most people are happy with their results from using these two methods alternately.
The convenience of doing these treatments at home is an added benefit and will save you time and money. Microdermabrasion is the safest alternative if you have mild skin conditions and are unsure if getting a chemical peel is right for you.

Glycolic Acid Peel and Where to buy Glycolic Acid in UK

Glycolic Acid peel facial treatments are the most popular and commonly used facial rejuvenation treatments available. They are a very effective treatment, results are usually obvious to the client after the first session and further enhanced with future treatments. With such positive results at a relatively low price it’s clear to see why they are so popular. The fact that this treatment can be derived from naturally occurring Glycolic acid, found in sugar-cane, sugar beets, pineapple, cantaloupe and unripened grapes, only adds to its popularity.

Glycolic Acid Strength

Glycolic Acid peels are considered superficial peels as they only penetrate through the epidermis and papillary dermis (the upper layers of the skin), to an approximate depth of 0.6mm. As a qualified Beauty Therapist it is possible to use glycolic acid in concentrations of 20% plus, home kits can be purchased with concentrations of between 10-20%. In addition to the concentration pH also plays an important role in determining the potency of the glycolic acid in solution. For example Doctors are able to use a peel which has a pH as low as 0.6,( battery acid has a pH 0 and sulfuric acid a pH of 1),so glycolic acid is strong enough to completely breakdown the epidermal layer of the skin. Whereas, many home kits have a pH of approximate 2.5, (vinegar has a pH of 2 and orange juice a pH of 3), so have quite a weak glycolic acid in comparison.
The procedure includes a thorough cleanse, followed by the application of a pre-glycol solution, which removes the hydro-lipidic film from the skins surface, preparing the skin for the absorption of the glycol gel. Once the Glycol gel is applied you may experience a slight stinging sensation, this is perfectly normal. The time that the gel is left on the skin will increase with each treatment, from possibly 3 to 4 minutes for the first treatment up to 12 to 14 minutes. The gel is neutralised after the desired period of time. To finish a soothing massage followed by an appropriate mask, tone and moisturise

Glycolic Acid Peel – The Results

Glycolic AcidThe Glycolic Acid Peel is an effective because the glycolic acid has the smallest molecular weight; meaning it has the best absorbency and highest capacity to penetrate the skin. Thereby the glycolic acid removes the keratinised cells and penetrates deep down, promoting the production of cells in the germination layer, making it radiant and smooth, besides as acting as a regulator for sebum. It promotes a fast skin exfoliation and thereby stimulating the fibroblast reproduction and the production of collagen. The glycolic acid peel therefore results in fresher, healthier looking skin with a more plumped-up appearance.

  • На кожу наносится очищающее средство, которое увлажняет, но при этом не нарушает кислотность тела. Оно оптимально подготавливает его к воздействию кислотой;
  • Непосредственно нанесение гликолевой кислоты;
  • Нанесение средства, которое нейтрализует кислоту;

  • Беременным и кормящим женщинам;
  • При наличии бородавок;
  • Когда обостряется герпес и другие кожные заболевания;
  • После гормональной терапии;
  • После облучения химиотерапией;

  • Кожа становится более упругой и эластичной;
  • Даже те кто делали пилинг летом, не жалуются на негативные последствия;
  • Его легко проводить в домашних условиях если соблюсти все правила;
